On 19 September 2024, the Shechem Children’s Home celebrated its 6th founding anniversary in an atmosphere of joy and thanksgiving. The event was attended by staff, volunteers, board members, and key partners who have been instrumental in the home’s ongoing mission. Ptr. Jackson Natividad, one of the board members, delivered a moving and inspirational message, reminding everyone present of the importance of compassion and resilience.
The Shechem Children’s Home, an assessment center for rescued survivors of online exploitation, has become a safe space for vulnerable children. Launched on 8 September 2018, under the leadership of the Church of the Nazarene Philippines and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Shechem Children’s Home has provided safety, care, and rehabilitation to children affected by one of the darkest facets of human exploitation—online sexual exploitation.
Leody Echavez, the Regional NCM Coordinator and Chairman of the Board of Shechem expressed gratitude and highlighted the efforts and dedication of all those who have contributed to the center’s success. He spoke about the journey Shechem has undertaken since its inception, recalling the challenges they faced and the triumphs they achieved in making the home a refuge for children who had endured the trauma of online exploitation.
“We stand here today not just to celebrate six years but to honor the courage of the children who have found healing here and the commitment of our staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide a safe, nurturing environment,” said Echavez. He also acknowledged the essential role of the International Justice Mission (IJM) and other partners, such as the Philippine Children’s Ministries Network (PCMN), World Hope International, and Wholistic Transformation Resource Center (WTRC), whose partnership has been pivotal in the center’s mission to protect and restore these children.
The 6th-anniversary celebration was filled with joy, reflection, and hope. The event was designed to celebrate Shechem’s past and look forward to its future. A series of presentations showcased the creativity and enthusiasm of the children and staff, who prepared songs, dances, and performances that reflected the spirit of renewal and healing. The staff prepared a feast, enhancing the atmosphere of warmth and community. The children participated in games and fun activities, their laughter filling the space—a reminder of how far they’ve come since their days of exploitation. For many, it was also a time to share testimonies of their journey to recovery and express their gratitude for the love and care they’ve received at Shechem.
Ms. Analyn Ablao, Shechem’s Operations Manager, shared her heartfelt thanks during the celebration. She expressed her deep gratitude for the support that Shechem has received over the years, saying, “We couldn’t have done this alone. The love and generosity of our supporters, staff, and volunteers have sustained us, and we are truly blessed to be part of this life-changing work.”
Echavez also took a moment to honor the dedication of the staff and volunteers. He emphasized their commitment to shaping the lives of the children they serve. “I am proud of all our staff and volunteers,” Echavez remarked. Your dedication to this mission—providing a safe space for children who have suffered so much—is commendable and life-changing. You have given these children hope and the chance for a better future.”
As Shechem Children’s Home looks to the future, exciting developments are on the horizon, particularly with the newly renovated house. This renovated facility will offer enhanced living conditions and additional resources for the children, making it a crucial milestone in the center’s mission. The renovation is not just a symbol of progress but also a testimony to Shechem’s commitment to continuously improving the services and environment for the children.
However, challenges remain. One pressing need for Shechem is acquiring a vehicle to aid in the daily transport of staff and children. The vehicle would facilitate daily operations, medical appointments, and other essential activities. “While we have come so far, there is still much to do,” Ablao acknowledged. “A van would significantly improve our ability to meet the children’s and our staff’s needs. We are hopeful that through continued support, we will be able to address this and other needs.”
Shechem Children’s Home has come a long way since its launch six years ago. What began as a vision to protect children from the horrors of online exploitation has evolved into a thriving community of healing and hope. While challenges like the need for a vehicle remain, the overwhelming success of the 6th-anniversary celebration reminds them how far they’ve come and how much more they can achieve.
As Shechem looks to the future, the commitment to the children remains stronger than ever. The road ahead is filled with promise, thanks to the continued efforts of the dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners who have made this mission possible. With the newly renovated facility, Shechem is prepared to serve even more children, offering them a fresh start and a chance at a better life.
