Father of David Harris, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Asia-Pacific Region Passed Away

by | Jan 30, 2014

David Harris - Funeral Australia: John “Tonga” Scout Harris passed away on January 22, 2014 in Liverpool, Australia, as a result of complications from surgery.

John was born 22nd April 1941, Neifau, in the Vava’u group of islands of the Kingdom of Tonga. As a 9yr old a paternal uncle took John to live in New Zealand for better educational and life opportunities. He met his wife Margaret, a native of Niue Island, their union was blessed with six sons. The Harris’ moved to Australia in 1980, seeking better opportunities for their family, after arrangements for their potential migration to the USA were unsuccessful.
Surgery for the removal of John’s spleen, likely due to metastisised cancer from his liver, led to multiple infections, and ultimately the failure of vital organs. The family had maintained a vigil throughout John’s hospitalisation. The family and celebration/funeral services were overflowing with family and friends, from Hawaii, New Zealand, interstate, paying their respects to one known for his humility, gentle and inclusive nature, strong work ethic, and deep and joyful love for his family.
Long-time family friend, former pastoral colleague and mentor to David, principal of Nazarene Theological College (Brisbane), Rev. Dr. Bruce Allder, led the celebration/funeral service, assisted by the Harris’ local pastor, Rev. Caine and Sally Pennell, with a fitting and beautiful solo, “Be Still,” from Sally. John, a roof/plumber for some 54yrs, retired to the Central Coast of NSW in 2011. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, five sons (their second son, Peter, pre-deceased John by 30yrs), 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
The Harris’ have been overwhelmed with loving and prayerful support, and would appreciate your continued prayer for them in the days ahead.
