Update: Urgent Prayer for Tonga

by | Jan 28, 2022

Thank you for your continued prayers for Tonga especially for our brothers and sisters who were affected by the tragic disaster. Exactly 10 days after the tsunami hit, and all power and communications were cut off, the Melanesia-South Pacific field was thrilled to receive a message from Rev. In-Kwon Kim.

Rev. Kim sent an email to our field leaders to report that they are safe and well. They also have sufficient water and food. The tsunami wave came quite close to the Mango Tree Respite Center but it didn’t come onto the property and therefore caused no tsunami damage to the center. But the property was covered with 1-2 cm of volcanic ash. Rev. Kim is trying to clear up the ash but it is very dusty. They have to wear masks to try and keep the ash from getting in their lungs. Also, the ash is making their skin itchy.

Also, the biggest challenge is the sufficient supply of drinking water. The water tanks were polluted with volcanic ash and is not safe to drink. The In-Kwons are closely monitoring how to best provide help. Currently, various government organizations are working to provide drinking water to Tonga.

Please continue to pray for our church in Tonga.

  • Pray for strength and wisdom as they have a lot of work to do to get everything cleaned up and re-open.
  • Pray that they will have rain to help wash things and clean the ash.
  • Pray for our church as they respond to the needs in their community, being the hands and feet of Jesus during this challenging time.

If you would like to partner with the Melanesia/South Pacific field by giving towards the disaster response in Tonga, you can give to NCM-Global Emergency Relief Fund by clicking this link.
