SOLOMON ISLANDS — More than 50 women from 14 local churches across the Solomon Islands District gathered at Valapata Church of the Nazarene, 16–19 June 2026, for the district’s 6th Women’s Convention.
Representing six ministry areas—Makira, Guadalcanal, East Kwaio, Malaita Central, Roviana, and Vella—the women gathered under the theme, “Let Your Light Shine,” based on Matthew 5:16.
For many participants, reaching Valapata was itself a testimony of faith and determination. Some traveled for nearly a week, while others spent two days making the journey. Several crossed open waters by motorized banana boat, overcoming fears and difficult travel conditions. For some, it was their first district women’s convention.
The gathering opened with a colorful parade and welcome ceremony. The Honiara women led the convention theme song, “Let Your Light Shine,” while groups from other ministry areas shared songs of praise. Women from the Uniting Church also supported the convention by providing catering and joining the evening fellowship and programs.
Throughout the four days, participants took part in worship, dawn prayer, devotions, preaching, altar calls, home visitation, life-skills training, sports, and practical ministry sessions.
Guest speaker Rev. Ruth Norrie spoke from Matthew 5:14–16, challenging the women to let the light of Christ shine in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. She emphasized holy living and encouraged participants to guard against attitudes and practices that can weaken their Christian witness.
A session on forgiveness also had a significant impact. Women were encouraged to surrender hurts, broken relationships, and unforgiveness to God. Many responded at the altar, praying for healing and renewed relationships.
Morning devotions centered on the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13. Using the image of oil that keeps a lamp burning, leaders encouraged the women to remain spiritually prepared through God’s Word, prayer, fellowship, discipleship, and continued growth in Christ. A skit based on Psalm 119:105 reinforced the call to keep Christ’s light shining in daily life.
Other sessions addressed positive parenting, wise use of time and technology, digital evangelism through social media and online learning, and ways churches can create greater opportunities for children and youth.
During dawn prayers, the women gathered in groups of three to pray for their children, spouses, families, churches, and ministries. A shared burden emerged—a desire to see their loved ones come to faith in Christ and God’s Kingdom continue to grow throughout the Solomon Islands.
The convention concluded on 19 June with the symbolic passing of the torch to the East Kwaio ministry area, which will host the next convention in June 2028.
The women returned home renewed in faith and committed to letting the light of Christ shine in their families, churches, communities, and beyond.
