Living Water – Brings Light to the Hospital and Hearts in PNG

Kudjip, Papua New Guinea   Thursday, May 23, 2013

When we think about sharing the gospel, we think of the “living water.” This takes on a whole new meaning at the Nazarene Mission Hospital located at Kudjip, Papua New Guinea, where water brings light to the hospital and to hearts!

The 130-bed Nazarene hospital located at Kudjip, is the only major hospital in the Jawaka Province. Running a hospital this size requires a consistent source of reliable electricity.

God has provided just such a source through the almost 200 inches of rainfall received annually in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Dr. Erin Meier reported this week that our Nazarene Team, headed by missionary Earl Hartwig, with HCJB Global, is making great progress on the Hydro Electric Project.

This is a tremendous example of collaboration as many workers from local communities have been participating in the process and mission agencies partner to bring this project to fruition. The diversion canal has been completed and work has begun on the actual dam that will help divert the water down the canal. Pouring of concrete on the dam has started and the reservoir area behind the dam has been prepared.

“A lot has been completed and a lot more needs to be done, but the workers are doing good work. Continue to pray for Earl and his team,” stated Dr. Meier.

Your prayers are needed for the safety of the crew of more than 85 who are working on various aspects of this project. Pray also that the hearts of these local workers will be receptive to the Gospel that is shared each morning before the day’s work begins. “Praise God with us that this morning during devotions, seven of the crew accepted Christ! Pray that they will stand firm in their new faith,” Earl Hartwig reported on May 1st.
In 2012 our Kudjip medical team saw over 56,700 outpatients and cared for more than 5,700 inpatients. The medical team performed 556 major surgeries and more than 1,000 minor surgical procedures. Every year hundreds of people give their lives to Christ at the hospital, new churches are started, miracles happen, people grow in their faith, patients find comfort and some face death with new hope. God is truly transforming lives through “living water!”
