14-Oct-2014. Tuesday PRAISE Update. Brian contacted us today and said that other than receiving 22 inches of rain in just 24 hours, life was getting back to normal! Thank you for your prayers for the Church and people of Japan!
12-Oct-2014 Sun AM update from Missionary Julie Woolery:
“Thank you for your prayers! The typhoon has passed Okinawa and lost a lot of strength during the night. It was predicted that the winds would still be very strong this morning, but they are much calmer. It is reported that we received 22 inches (!) of rain yesterday, so I know there is flooding in different parts of the island, and some people are without power. Today people will be cleaning up and assessing damage. Thank you again for your prayers!”
11-Oct-2014 Sat AM update from Missionary Brian Woolery:
“This storm is a big one and the eye is expected to pass over us later today. The winds hit us last night far earlier than usual since the storm was still almost 24 hours from it’s closest point to the island. There’s a lot of rain with this typhoon, which makes people concerned about flooding and power outages. Our home and the church [Keystone Nazarene Church] are both in areas not prone to flooding, though many people near rivers might be at risk.
Everyone is hunkered down for what looks to be a 2-day storm!”
Okinawa, Japan: Winds are reportedly rising on Japan’s Okinawa island as of Friday afternoon, as Super Typhoon Vongfong moves across the ocean at a speed of 8 knots.
Vongfong is currently a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) gusting to 165 mph (265 kph).
Contact was made with missionaries to Okinawa, Brian and Julie Woolery, who reported that it was windy but that the impact of the storm has not yet been felt.
A second tropical cyclone (Hudhud) is forecast to make landfall on the eastern shores of India in the early morning hours of Sunday.
