Port Vila, Vanuatu, South Pacific: The following report has been provided from the Melanesia South Pacific Field Strategy Coordinator, Harmon Schmelzenbach,
“We’ve been in ongoing communication again this morning (Sunday), with our missionaries on the ground in Vanuatu, David and Sylvia Potter.
The Potters indicate that while the Isaac’s home (Peter and Jenny who are also Nazarene Missionaries in Vanuatu) was flooded throughout the storm with a ‘river running through it,’ at this point they are safe and cleaning up.
As can be imagined, and also seen on international news, the situation on the ground is tense after this devastating storm. A top concern for all involved now is the provision of a sufficient supply of potable water, basic food and shelter.
The Potters have access to a generator and an operational vehicle, and are making their way around today as debris is being cleared from some of the main roads. AM/FM radio stations, internet, and cellular communications are still inoperable or very limited.
The outer islands of Tanna and Anawa, where we have church work, were also hit hard. At the present time, we know that at least two of our Nazarene Churches that had ‘semi-permanent’ structures have been destroyed.”
