Earthquake in Mindanao – How You Can Respond, Updated!

by | Nov 8, 2019

Our Nazarene Disaster Response team just concluded their 2nd wave of psychological first aid and support program at Concepcion Elem. School, Makilala North Cotabato. 250 children along with their teachers joined the 3-day activity… Makilala is one of the hardest-hit municipalities during the onslaught of Earthquake swarms in Mindanao last month.

We thank the Lord for His protection and guidance to our team as they also experienced 2 earthquakes yesterday while running the program. Please continue to remember Mindanao in your prayers especially the children.”

Statement from the facebook post of Leody Echavez III – Field NCM Coordinator,

The affected area in Tulunan North Cotabato and neighboring provinces in Mindanao, Philippines.

On the 29th of October, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the municipality of Tulunan, on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. Over 188,000 people have been affected by this disaster, with over 30,000 displaced in the aftermath. There have also been, at the time of writing, 22 confirmed deaths and over 400 injuries. While evacuation centers in the area have been able to serve 24,000 people, over 7,000 have yet to be served by such centers. Not only is the human cost great, but the damage to infrastructure has been extensive. Over 800 schools have been damaged, and damage to roads and bridges has hampered relief efforts.

In the midst of this disaster, God is using the Church of the Nazarene and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries to respond to these needs. Aside from the material requirements, there is still a great financial need for disaster response in Mindanao. Below you can find contact information for Leody Echavez III and Daisy Fuentes with NCM Philippines, as well as giving methods for Filipino and international donations.

Please continue to pray for the people of Mindanao as they recover from this tragedy. We also ask prayer for relief workers with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, as well as those with other organizations.
