Australia: Maryborough, Queensland, Family Church of the Nazarene celebrated their 50th Anniversary on Sunday, October 8th, with a combined service with nearby Richmond Ave Church of the Nazarene. The sanctuary was full to capacity with regular attendees and returning members and friends.
Pastor Derek Lawton organised the day’s events and invited the worship team from the neighbouring Maryborough Richmond Street Church of the Nazarene to assist with music. The special message “Ministry of Blessing,” was shared by Dr. John Moore, Field Strategy Coordinator for the Australia New Zealand Field, who also serves as the Missional Superintendent.
Founding lay-pastors, Rob and Irene Farmer were present and Irene shared special memories of the early days before property was purchased and the building was erected. The first service was held in the Farmers’ one bedroom flat just months after the couple had married. Two years later, thanks to district and Alabaster funds, the building was finished and twelve original members were welcomed into the church.
Returning pastor and former Australia Northern Pacific District Superintendent, John Smith, brought greetings and shared memories of his time as pastor.
The anniversary was also celebrated with the presentation of three Distinguished Service Awards going to long-time members Pat and Dave Matheson and Berys Bentley, and of course no celebration would be complete without a fabulous chicken dinner that was held on the grounds!
“Though the emphasis is not a new one, we have decided to take as our goal for this coming year, EACH ONE REACH ONE,” stated pastor Lawton. The announcement was greeted with enthusiastic applause.
